description Maria, a nineteen-year-old Indonesian maid, goes to work at a rich businessman's home. Jonathan, the 22-year old crippled son, is a disillusioned but talented songwriter who has a distant, frustrated relationship with his parents. Maria's kindness, patience, and words of encouragement win him over and they develop a close relationship. Jonathan's status-conscious mother, Anne, however, thinks Maria is too poor to be mixing with Jonathan. Paul, Jonathan's father, however, is ashamed of his own humble beginnings and chooses to ignore Maria and Jonathan's relationship. Anne, refusing to make decisions, forces Paul to "do something" about her son's relationship with the maid. Paul dismisses Maria and offers to pay her way home. Maria rejects Paul's bribe but decides to leave anyhow. Will Jonathan bear to see his one chance of happiness leave, or simply accept his parents' decision?
