Approaching Tang Shi Yan Yi Pin from its editions and documents : discussion on its characteristics as a late Ming commercial publication

Tang Sh...

Tang Shi Yan Yi Pin is a collection of Tang poetry on female compiled by Yang Zhaozhi in the late Ming Dynasty and it consists of four sections namely Ming Yuan (celebrated ladies), Xiang Lian (aromatic cosmetic box), Guan Ji (observing the courtesans) and Ming Hua (notable flowers). It was first published in the 46th year of Wanli period (1618). In the first year of Tianqi period (1621), Min Yishi of Wucheng reedited and republished the anthology, which was republished by Wu Renzu in the Dingmao year of Kangxi era (1687). Apart from the Wanli and Tianqi editions, Ming Hua Ji has a Japanese version published in the ninth year of Genroku (1696) and its selection of poems is very different from that of Wanli and Tianqi editions. As a collection of Tang poetry on female, Tang Shi Yan Yi is of great value in the research on Tang poetry collection in the Ming dynasty. However, many mistakes in t such as false entitles, overlapping inclusions and fake works prove itself a typical example of commercial publication in the Ming Period. A detailed study of its documents is thus made for revealing some characteristics of a collection Tang poetry as a Ming commercial publication.
