description I was enlightened by the article “Between compliance and resistance. Women and the middle-class way of life in Singapore” by Nirmala PuraShotam, which made me realize this middle class way of life that the majority of the women in Singapore pursued could turn out to be merely a beautiful illusion of modernity. This series of photographs address the imprisonment within a repetitious cycle of ‘progress’ for women. With more material and career choices, women’s social status is on the rise as women begin to feel an increasing sense of control over our lives. The culture of consumerism fuels more desire for material possessions but imprisons us in this notion: “you are what you own.” With reference to the Shanghai poster epoch, the uplifting images of women are perhaps just new requirements and standards for good housewives of a new era. Regardless of material progress, we are still framed in this traditional ‘face’ of women.
