The legend of the White Snake, one of the four Chinese folk legends, has been passed down to this day. For a long time, creators have been making new edits to the White Snake Legend, each version has adapted the plot of the characters in the legend to varying degrees, which reflects the living conditions and social atmosphere of women in the society of the time. The white snake legend takes the female snake demon as the main character, which gives the later generations the room to interpret or reshape the female image in the text.
This paper will focus on the relationship between the presentation of women's subjectivity in these texts and the social and cultural environments of the time, taking the representative version of White Snake in different ages, namely “The White Maiden Locked for Eternity in the Leifeng Pagoda (bai niang zi yong zhen lei feng ta)” by Feng Menglong in the late Ming Dynasty, the television series The Legend of New White Snake in 1992, the novel The Green Snake by Hong Kong author Li Bihua in 1980s, and the animated movie White Snake in 2019 as examples. By analyzing the development of female subjectivity in the editions of White Snake Legend in past, this paper looks at the influence of different social and cultural environments on female images in the texts, and interprets the progress of feminism in society with the development of the ethics of caring in modern times. |
