description This paper performs a fair comparison of the linear vernier permanent mag net (LVPM) machine, linear switched-flux permanent magnet (LSFPM) machine, and linear permanent magnet synchronous machine (LPMSM) with emphasis on thrust force capability, efficiency, power factor, and permanent magnets (PMs) material usage. Generally speaking, the force ripple rates increases significantly when the thrust force reaches high level and genetic algorithm is adopted in optimization to improve the performances of the three motors. The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) results show that with the same physical size, LVPMs perform well on efficiency, but poorly on power factor and PMs material usage. Al though requires a large amount of PMs material, LPMSM can offer very high thrust force capability, efficiency, and power factor. The average thrust force capability of LSFPM is the smallest, while its output thrust force ripple is low and can still offer a high power factor with very low requirements of PMs material.
