Summary: | With the increasing number of power electronic devices added to the electrical distribution systems in recent years, resolving their impact on the electrical distribution systems has become increasingly necessary when carrying out any modification or installation to a system. Particularly when a system powering nonlinear electronic load equipment, which creates harmonics distortion that can feedback into the systems and cause power problems.
To study the impact and solutions of nonlinear electronic load equipment on the input current, I modeled and simulated a typical nonlinear electronic load equipment, switched-mode power supply (SMPS) circuit in PSIM software. The SMPS was designed based on DC to DC buck converter typology with closed-loop control circuit. Then I applied a tuned passive filter and a shunt active filter in the SMPS circuit and generate simulation waveforms for both filters. Finally, I compared both filters from technical view and cost effectiveness view and give a conclusion.
