description | This research paper studies the methodologies of the polymeric and ceramic membranes to provide safe and sustainable water and sanitation solutions for the underserved communities in Asia. Undeniably, polymeric membranes dominate the membrane separation industry owing to their competitive nature in performance and economics. Progressively, given the advanced development in technology, ceramic membranes have proven to be advantageous such as high chemical resistance, high flux, durability, and long lifespan. However, ceramic membranes require a high initial capital cost compared to polymeric membranes when used for water treatment processes.
For ceramic membranes to be widely known and used for water treatment processes, further design and economic analysis are imperative to accurately evaluate their economic feasibility. The methods for economic feasibility would include life cycle cost (LCC) analysis, capital, and operational expense data from water treatment plants, etc. between polymeric and ceramic membranes. |
