description Malay weddings are the embodiment of the Malay culture that embraces modernisation whilst still practicing traditions. The genesis of ‘Raja Sehari in the 21st century’ came from the motivation to highlight an appreciation for the diminishing traditional aesthetics within Singapore Malay matrimonial whilst injecting its rightful purpose and relevance back within current time. Traditionally, majority of the objects presented during Malay weddings hold deeper symbolic meanings. Over time, these items have lost its meanings along with the change of design and aesthetics, which results in plenty of Malay millennials dropping the tradition. Rather than simply ignoring and challenging modernisation, the project itself will take on the form of amalgamating these two concepts through the various research of past and current designs in Singaporean Malay weddings and conclusively will take the form of a collection of Malay Matrimonial designs. Ultimately, the project aims to allow the Malay millennials to relate better to their traditions and culture, which in turn provides the Malay community a chance to depart with wisdom of the Malay culture and hopefully a new found appreciation and understanding towards the meaning behind their culture's matrimonial objects.
