Description
Summary:Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and adult disability in Singapore, and there is an increasing prevalence of stroke, especially among adults with existing medical conditions such as hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. Objective: This paper aims to analyse the Tradtional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome types of stroke patients, as well as their common presentations to better guide treatment. Method: A questionnaire-based survey was conducted on 106 patients at the Singapore Thong Chai Medical Institute (STCMI). Results: Qi Deficiency and Blood Stasis (QDBS) syndrome was found to be the most common syndrome, followed by Deficiency of Liver and Kidney (DLK) and Phlegm Stasis in Channels (PSC). The common presentations among stroke patients are limb weakness, unsteady gait, limb numbness, limb stiffness and fatigue. There was a significant association between syndrome types and gender, where more males are classified under the DLK syndrome, and more females under the QDBS syndrome. Conclusion: This study has provided insights into TCM syndrome types and stroke patients. However, more studies are required to investigate the correlation between TCM syndrome types and various factors.
