In order to ensure stable economic development, and maintain international competitiveness, Singapore has adopted a series of measures and strategies to tackle the population issues. The government introduced the “Foreign Talent Policy”, welcoming the entry of talents from all over the world to Singapore. Among them, immigrants from Mainland China made up the majority. However, the immigration policy has caused unhappiness and dissatisfaction among the local Singaporeans. Despite being both of the same ethnicity, the New Chinese immigrants and Singaporean Chinese have some characteristics that set them apart. And these differences have generated tensions and led to conflicts between the two communities. As it is known, the issue of ethnic group conflicts is regarded as a highly “sensitive” topic in Singapore. Hence, the local mass media would tend to avoid the discussion of it. But Mediacorp “unusually” produced a TV Drama series Love Thy Neighbour in 2011, which discussed and showcased the conflict between the New Chinese immigrants and the Singaporean Chinese. Why is this so? This paper will first examine the content presented in Love Thy Neighbour. Then compare it with the relevant text, newspaper articles, and other secondary sources, with the aim to demonstrate Love Thy Neighbour as a tool for the government. Its main functions include: quelling the discontent of the Singaporeans and promoting the government’s “Two-way Integration Strategy”. |
