较分析以凸显白氏妓女诗的特殊之处。
Courtesans in ancient China were often despised as sex workers who traded their bodies for money, and therefore considered them as part of a low-level profession. However, courtesans during the Tang Dynasty were much different from those that came from other dynasties. They are not only beautiful in appearance, but also possess musical skills and high levels of literacy. In this regard, courtesans in the Tang Dynasty were widely favored by intellectuals, and were often regarded as their best companions in terms of being a confidant and literary counterpart. The close relationship between courtesans and intellectuals in the Tang Dynasty was a special cultural phenomenon during that time. Bai Juyi, a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty, also had frequent contact with courtesans and often included them in the writing of his works. Bai Juyi's courtesan poems often reflected his personal emotions as well as his unique view on women. This paper will introduce ancient China's courtesan industry and the special characteristics of courtesans in the Tang Dynasty. Bai Juyi's courtesan poems will then be utilised as a medium to list out various types of courtesan poems and its cultural themes, which then shows the rich cultural connotations contained within. At the same time, this paper uses textual analysis and the male gaze theory to deconstruct Bai Juyi's imagery of courtesans in poems written during the Chang'an and “Four States” period. Furthermore, distinctive characteristics will be collated based on the courtesan poems he has written in different periods, which will then reflect Bai Juyi’s progressive view of women. Lastly, this paper will also focus on analyzing the interesting relationship between courtesans and intellectuals in the Tang Dynasty. Furthermore, unique characteristics of Bai Juyi's courtesan poems will be accentuated through the comparison with Li He's courtesan poems. |
