There are rarely films made for Tibetan women, depicting their real state of life and mind. As a representative of "Tibetan-language cinema", the Tibetan director Pema Tseden has always been committed to presenting authentic Tibetan culture and society on screen. In his earlier works, female characters were often marginalized. His film, “Balloon” (2019), for the first time, has Tibetan women as the main narrative subject. This unveils the mystery of Tibetan women to the world. The essay will use the film “Balloon” as a case study to investigate the gender dilemmas of Tibetan women.
In “Balloon”, Drolkar's plight as a woman is closely related to Tibetan beliefs. Being the central ideology of Tibetan society, religious beliefs also influence various aspects of Tibetan people's lives, such as the concept of life and death, value judgement and social order. Pema Tseden often incorporates religious concepts into the aesthetic and ideological content of his films. To understand Tibetan women’s gender dilemma in depth, it is necessary to study the religious connotations involved in the film. At the same time, the relation between religious beliefs and Tibetan women has received little attention from scholars. This essay will thus fill the research gap in this area, to gain a deeper understanding of the Tibetan women’s state of mind and gender dilemma.
