when African American involvement in sports took a more prominent stage, the field of
sports journalism itself tended to be side-lined in many of these discussions. Hence, this
project aims to investigate the role sports journalism played in African American race
relations in the U.S during the civil rights period. It delves into the relationships between the
athletes and sport journalists and how it changed as the civil rights era progressed from the
1950s to the 1960s. In addition, this project investigates the trials and tribulations faced by
African American sports journalists within the industry during the civil rights era. |
