description | This paper examines how individual mobility and one’s audience can affect the relationship between in-group and out-group evaluations. In-group and out-group evaluations were obtained through essays from Singaporean undergraduates randomly assigned to four conditions (easy to leave, in-group audience; difficult to leave, in-group audience; easy to leave, out-group audience; difficult to leave, out-group audience). Through multiple regression analysis (n=114), a negative relationship was found between in-group and out-group evaluations when high-identifiers were communicating to an out-group audience and when low-identifiers were communicating to an in-group audience. A positive relationship was found for high-identifiers who were communicating to an in-group and low-identifiers who were communicating to an out-group audience. Individual mobility was found to have no effect on the relationship. |
