Summary:The world's high energy particle accelerators, like the LHC, are large, expensive facilities that have produced some of the most prominent scientific discoveries in history of mankind. The high demand for these facilities has spurred efforts to miniaturize them to produce smaller, affordable, high-quality particle accelerators that may be made widely available. High-intensity light sources and advanced light-manipulation techniques have allowed accelerating particles to very high speeds across incredibly short distances. In this project, student will study the laser driven acceleration of charged particles in an electromagnetic field by designing a structure that capable of accelerating an electron to relativistic speeds within 1 m of physical distance. This research will open opportunities for compact and efficient high-energy particle accelerators with applications in industrial inspection, security scanning and medical imaging.
