In fact, the COVID-19 pandemic and its restrictions have led to a massive increment in the download of online dating applications (ODAs). However, there remains an unanswered question of why youths are still finding it difficult to date and form romantic relationships even with the prevalent use of ODAs as a medium to meet people outside one’s social circle. This paper thus seeks to explore youths’ experiences of dating to understand the difficulties encountered when they engage in the formation of romantic relationships. Based on qualitative research, our findings highlight how the gender implications on dating, flexible definitions of dating, as well as the uncertainties of online relationships, are key factors that influence individual decisions in beginning romantic relationships. Our paper also highlights the unique context of the COVID-19 pandemic and how it has introduced additional areas that caused individuals to waver in their dating decisions. |
