Through the manipulation of lyrics and music videos in NDP songs, government officials have consistently emphasised their ideals regarding what expressions of patriotism should entail. Singapore’s social transformation in the 21st century, coupled with technological advancements, has inevitably led to an apparent trend where citizens create parodies and covers inspired by official NDP songs. This phenomenon thus raises questions pertaining to the relevance of different NDP songs in today’s context, especially so given their widespread presence on social media today. As such, this paper aims to explore various versions of post-2000 NDP songs, inclusive of the official version published yearly by government officials, as well as the NDP song parodies and covers created by citizens, through the use of text analysis. This paper will focus on highlighting and comparing the role that each version of NDP song plays in providing citizens with a platform through which they can express their acts of patriotism. |
