description The growth in cases of elderly passing away at home unnoticed in Singapore gives rise to a concern over the safety issue of elderly living alone, and this situation would aggravate with an alarming rate of aging population. The technology advancement of pulse-based radar sensors today, provides vast opportunities in various fields, the emerging one would be healthcare markets. This promising technology has several advantages over the passive infrared (PIR) motion sensors which are commonly used in the current elderly monitoring system (EMS): more precise measurements and improved stability. Hence Impulse-Radio Ultra-Wideband (IR-UWB) radar was proposed to be used in the Activity Level Monitoring System (ALMS). This project aims to design a set of signal processing techniques for ALMS to continuously monitor activity level of elderly living alone in an indoor environment. Movement index is interpreted from the processed signal and incorporated into ALMS, followed by conducting performance evaluation of the system based on experimental results of various scenarios. In conclusion, the author proves the capability and potential of IR-UWB radars in monitoring systems.
