Summary:This final year project explores the use of smartphones, which are indispensable in our daily lives, to enhance the safety and well-being of the elderly. The primary focus of the project was on utilising the built-in sensor of smartphones, specifically the microphone, to detect and monitor interactions with household appliances performed by the elderly. The distinctive audio signatures emitted by these appliances and various activities form the basis for analysis, providing valuable insights into the daily routine of the elderly. Moreover, this project goes beyond merely identifying routine activities by detecting unusual patterns in these interactions. Such anomalies may indicate potential safety risks or changes in the well-being of the elderly. The system can promptly alert caregivers or family members about the irregular activity patterns, thus providing an additional layer of safety for the elderly living alone.
