| Summary: | The aim of this paper is to highlight the significant role the phenomena of reduplication and Case Copying play in syntax, taking into consideration the formation of lexical anaphors in Manipuri, a Tibeto-Burman language, and Telugu, a Dravidian language. We argue that the syntactic exploitation of these phenomena in two languages that belong to different language families points towards universal principles of the mental organization of language. We shall first present a description of the formation of lexical anaphors in Manipuri, and discuss briefly their syntactic behavior in the Government and Binding framework. We then go on to discuss the nature of lexical anaphors in Telugu, and argue that in spite of belonging to two different language families, both Manipuri and Telugu share much in common, not only with regard to the syntactic behavior of lexical anaphors (reflexives and reciprocals), but also in the complex morphology and syntax involved in the formation of reduplicated polymorphemic anaphors and Case Copying.
