description | Grief refers to the experience of bereavement following the death of a loved one (Jakoby, 2014). During these experiences of grief, expressing the grief emotions and engaging in conversations about the deceased loved ones are beneficial in helping the bereaved navigate the loss and work through the grief (Jakoby, 2014; Walter, 1999). Despite the importance of grief conversations, there is presently a lack of research on interactions between surviving individuals working through grief. Thus, the present aims to employ the use of the conversation analytic method – a robust and well-established method of investigating interactions and verbal communicative practices (Chatwin, 2013) – to investigate the sequential organisation of grief conversations and provide insights to how bereaved individuals successfully engage in talks regarding their grief and grief experiences. The analysis revealed five common components of grief conversations: the lead up to the talk about the deceased, the description of the circumstances surrounding the death, recounting of memories of the deceased, communicating the feelings of grief, and the moving forward component. These components are facilitated using various devices including troubles-telling sequences and storytelling sequences. The insights gathered from this research on grief conversations may see practical applications in the field of bereavement counselling, and guide counsellors to use more effective communication strategies with their client. |
