description Science translation and museum translation have always been classified under the category of specialised and technical translations. In this project, trail booklets and gallery elements of the Science Centre Singapore were translated from English to Mandarin Chinese. The target audience of the translated texts consists of Chinese visitors to the Science Centre Singapore, both local and overseas. The translation process was guided by the functional theories of translation which include Katharina Reiss’s suggestion of applying translation methods according to text types, Justa Holz-Mänttäri’s translatorial action model, Skopos theory proposed by Hans J. Vermeer, and the principle of functionality plus loyalty proposed by Christiane Nord. Coupled with the needs of localisation and multimodality in science museum translation, various strategies were employed to produce translations that are scientifically accurate, up-to-date, and suitable for the target audience. Discussions on challenges faced during the translation process and the strategies employed to overcome them underscore the importance of domain knowledge, multimodality, political sensitivity, and industrial knowledge in translation. This paper also attempts to address the significance of situating translation within the curatorship in a science museum. It also highlights the importance of scientific accuracy and the creation of a unified narrative in scientific curatorship of a science museum in Singapore.
