Description
Summary:Tibeto-Burman reconstructional theories explaining tonogenesis through the nature of the initial consonant of the syllable are unable to take into account the pecul¬iar tonological developments in Kuki-Naga and Baric lan¬guages. The assumption of either a two tone or three tone system of the proto-language fails on similar grounds. The reconstructional difficulties encountered by such theories are briefly recapitulated. At the same time this raises the question of what entity a theory is like.
