Summary: | This dissertation takes the position that Mauritius is an important element in India’s Indian Ocean Strategy (IOS). There are two main concerns for India when it comes to its IOS: firstly, there is the security of the SLOCs and secondly there is thwarting China’s presence and influence in the Indian Ocean (IO). The use of islands as “springboards” has enabled India to defend its interests, project power and exert influence in the IO and beyond. Mauritius and its islands have provided India with the opportunity and possibility to have more “springboards” in the IO and thus enhancing India’s security. Due to its diaspora linkages with India and its geostrategic location in the IO, Mauritius has become an indissociable part of India’s IOS especially at a time when Mauritius and India relations are characterised by mutual trust and
reliability. |
