Description
Résumé:Today, sign language has become more visible in public life in Singapore, thanks to the increasing presence of sign language interpreters in public spaces, in the media, and in the workplace. Interest in learning sign language has also taken off, leading to much more - and much welcomed! - awareness of the local Deaf culture and community. However, there still exists various misconceptions about sign language, such as the notion that it is not a ‘real’ language and that it is inferior to spoken languages. This publication, therefore, is a timely and necessary one. It provides an introduction to sign languages in general, as well as a succinct yet comprehensive overview of Singapore Sign Language and its intriguing history.
