description The investigations described in this thesis are principally concerned with the general behaviour, analysis and design in shear of reinforced concrete deep beams subjected to combined loading with various top to bottom loading ratios. A brief historical review of the experimental work on deep beams is given. Code comparisons for top loading are presented and they include AC1 Code, CIRIA Guide-2, Canadian Code, Hsu-Mau's explicit equations and Zsutty's method. As for bottom loading and combined top-and-bottom loading, two design approaches are given, viz. CIRIA Guide-2 and Lee-Siao's method. In particular, the design equation in CIRIA Guide-2 for top-loaded deep beams is modified slightly to give more consistent shear strength predictions for the test results.
