Summary: | This dissertation aims to study the major considerations affecting the design and construction of deep basements in Singapore. The study describes the various types of earth retaining systems and construction methods that can be used. Two case studies, the Bugis Junction and Suntec City projects are chosen for in-depth study on the techniques deployed for the construction of the basements. The projects serve also to illustrate the other important considerations governing the construction of deep basements such as site constraints, soil conditions, condition monitoring, instrumentation works and waterproofing. Some of the construction problems encountered in the above projects and the solutions adopted are also covered.
