description In this thesis, circular/cylindrical phased array antennas for electronically steered ground surveillance radar are studied. A cylindrical array is considered for this radar due to the requirement of pencil beam with low sidelobe level. As the detailed specifications of the radar system are yet to be resolved, the main emphasis of the M.Eng project is placed on the circular/cylindrical array pattern synthesis. Two iterative numerical techniques, namely constrained adaptive and genetic algorithms, are exploited and improved for radiation pattern synthesis of arbitrary arrays.
