In 1997 it was bird flu; recently the swine flu swelled to a global pandemic, with these viral diseases running amok, it is obvious that there are increasing number of new viruses and bacteria are to be found or spot. Infectious diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and protozoa are the most common. The control of microbiological hazards to reduce the incidence of infectious disease, improve the quality of water, requires rapid and simultaneous detection of multiple microbial pathogens including bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Recently, with advances in PCR methods and microarray assays, both water-borne pathogen community composition and quantization of pathogen load is being realized. The high sensitivity and specificity of molecular techniques, allows direct detection of pathogens in water samples. This project is to evaluate an active mixer for DNA extraction followed by PCR test. As the procedure of DNA extraction for PRC test has to be understood and different types of mixing tubing are to be used for the test. Therefore, the author will be focus on the experiments on modes of vibration which required mixing the Dynabeads with the chemical together properly.
