The number of new Chinese immigrants in Singapore has risen enormously in the recent years, leading to a controversy among the locals. On appearance, it presents a rather harmonious relation between the new Chinese immigrants and the locals. However, with more careful observation, one could discover subtle estrangement between them. Thus, the Singapore government has actively implemented many integration polices to aid the integration of the new Chinese immigrants. At the same time, the Singapore government urges the locals to accept the new Chinese immigrants with an open heart. This paper intends to analyse the estrangement between the new Chinese immigrants and the locals through the National Identity perspective, and points out the disparity between views of scholars, Singapore government and the locals. |
