description With increasingly sophisticated network-based multimedia applications being introduced, the ability of networks to support these applications becomes more important. It is a very challenging problem to realize an efficient architecture to transport this real-time traffic as well as the normal data traffic within a single network. Most of the existing traffic control mechanisms are inadequate in providing Quality of Service (QoS) in a manner that closely emulates the transmission pattern of the real-time traffic. In addition, the research on QoS provisioning is often focused solely on this traffic, and the requirements of non-real-time traffic are generally ignored. The result is inefficient network support of integrated services.
