description The existing watermarking methods for binary images either have low embedding capacity or have poor visual quality of watermarked images. Two fragile watermarking methods for binary images are proposed for the purpose of authentication. The first method is a segment-based watermarking method. In the embedding process, a sequence of continuous black pixels segment is searched in a binary image. After a segment is located, the pre-defined masks are used to check two ends of the segment to determine its embeddability. For embeddable segments, a black pixel is added or removed at either end of the segment by using the odd or even number of black pixels in the segment to embed bit “1” or “0”. The modified locations are the selected corner pixels of the characters. Experimental results show that it can achieve a good visual quality and higher embedding capacity than some binary document watermarking methods reported in literature.
