This report presents the development of a planar micro filter for separating fetal nucleated red blood cells (FNRBC) for non-invasive prenatal diagnosis. The filter uses differences in dielectrophoresis (DEP) force acting on FNRBC and maternal red blood cells to separate them from one another. DEP force acts on polarizable particles under a non-uniform electric field, and it can be used for particle separation. The non-uniform electric field was generated by an array of 3 dimensional (3D) microelectrodes fabricated using microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technique.
