Summary:For the design of a desalination plant, the intake and outfall structures need to be properly addressed. From an environmental viewpoint, it is important to design a brine outfall so that the discharge plume can be mixed rapidly with the ambient coastal waters. Previous studies have suggested a 60 degree inclined jet to be the optimal discharge scheme in terms of the mixing efficiency. However, the maximum rise height associated with 60 degree is relatively large, which might not be suitable for disposal in shallow coastal wasters.
