description | The Invisible Force is an illustrated feature focusing on the lives and stories of the Singapore Gurkhas, men from Nepal, who serve in the Gurkha Contingent (GC) in the Singapore Police Force (SPF).
The 60th anniversary of the GC slipped by quietly and unceremoniously in this nation, just recently in 2009. Mention the Gurkhas to the man on the street, and most would know them as an elite force guarding important locations and ministers. They are also famed for their bravery, loyalty and impartiality – as observed and retold through Singapore's history in several communal riots during the turbulent 50s and 60s.
Beyond the above description, the tale of the Gurkhas in Singapore is shrouded in much secrecy. Housed in a barricaded compound off Joo Seng street, little is known about the Gurkha and his family living behind the barbed wires of Mount Vernon Camp – his daily life, his observations about Singapore as well as his emotions and grievances.
From fieldwork in both Singapore and Nepal, our project uncovers the Gurkha's journey from Nepal to Singapore, his life here with his family and their fortunes after they return home. |
