Block based motion estimation and compensation assume that all the pixels contained within the block undergo uniform motion. This assumption does not hold true in practical cases. It could be viewed as though the motion vectors of different pixels are quantized to give an optimal value where the prediction error turns out to be the least. Adjacent blocks again undergo such a quantization resulting in blocky artifacts on the edges of the blocks. Overlapped Block Motion Compensation is one of the techniques used to overcome this effect.
