The Differentiated Service (Diff-Serv) framework is one of the many proposals by the Internet Research Community to bring in the service guarantee on Internet Protocol based networks. Diff Serv works by a simple concept of marking and aggregating packets according to the agreed profile and giving preferential treatment to selected packets at routers based on a packet dropping algorithm. However, the use of aggregation at routers makes it difficult for service guarantee to be met for end-to-end users, in particulars when an end-to-end connection has to cross domain boundaries where policing actions may be applied.
