description | The aim of this project is to investigate and analyse the deformation and strain experience by the pipe when subjected to bending. This involves fabrication of support, mounting of strain gauges, experimental and software investigation of the behavior under bending.
The research work of this project was carried out in three stages. The first stage involves literature review of existing works. A total of three journals were reviewed, namely, Failure of glass/polyester filament wound pipe, Effects of winding angle on the failure of filament wound pipe and Effects of resin flexibility on the properties of the filament wound tubes.
The second stage of this project involves fabricating of support and mounting of strain gauges onto the composite. The thickness and width of the support will affect the result of the experiment. Strain gauges will be installed on the pipe with extra care to prevent it from getting a wrong strain reading when the experiment is continuing.
The third stage of this project involves conducting a four points bending experiment. A total of three experiments were carried out. Load versus strain graph was plotted out to compare the strain each strain gauges in different angle and axis experiences. From the result, it concluded that the further the distance of the load from the support, the higher the strain a pipe will experience.
The last stage of this research involves analysis of the experiment through Finite Element Analysis software called Ansys. With the results taken from Ansys analysis, it was observed that the tension and compression strain the pipe experiences during the experiment was accurate. |
