Description
Summary:Internet telephony circumvents expensive international telephone toll charges by using the Internet as an intermediary medium to transport voice signals between two users. In doing so, transcontinental telephone calls can be achieved at the mere costs of local telephone calls and nominal Internet connectivity charges. A wide range of Internet telephony systems has been developed and marketed. However, most of these systems are developed using proprietary technology. Hence, inter-operability between systems from different vendors is not supported. In addition, the transmission of digitised voice signals which can be lost in the packet switched network environment of the Internet, causes intermittent voice losses and quality degradation.
