description This thesis essentially focuses on alternative musicians in Singapore, showing how they are more likely than any other group of local musicians to produce a Singaporean sound. Employing Bourdieu’s key theoretical ideas, I will explore the field of alternative music in Singapore, focusing on the musicians, listeners and the State. Through the voices of alternative musicians, I argue that while a distinctive musical temperament predispose them to actualise a distinct Singaporean sound, much depends also on the key actors within the field of alternative music.
