Description
Summary:The reinforcement of electromagnetic interference by carbon fibre for syntactic foam was successfully demonstrated. The electromagnetic interference shielding provided by the composite was tested for carbon fibre filler loading from 1 wt% to 5 wt% with 3 wt% of carbon microspheres. The electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of the composite has strong links to its conductivity and is frequency dependent. The highest electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness was at the highest carbon fibre loading of 5 wt% with 11.4 dB at 1.15 GHz, which implied that electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness increased with carbon fibre filler loading due to the increase of the amount of interconnected carbon fibre. The highest specific electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness was also observed to be at carbon fibre loading of 5 wt% with 11.8 dB.cm3/g at 1.15 GHz. It was also observed that the main mechanism of EMI shielding is reflection.
