description Under conditions of globalization, religious groups and traditions have been responding to environmental challenges as part of their efforts to remain socially relevant. This study conducts a sociological investigation of religious environmentalism in Singapore. It examines the relationship between religious ideas and environmental action. Qualitative research methods including participant observations of Buddhist youth groups’ activities and interviews were conducted on young Buddhists aged 18-25 in Singapore. The analysis also includes the influence of local socio-political conditions. Findings suggest that young Buddhists’ knowledge and awareness of environmental concern is not a guarantee of actual action. I argue that purposeful environmental ethics and action may only be deduced from specific interpretations of ideas of salvation.
