Description
Summary:The objective of this report is to study membrane fouling in anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) systems. Several factors causing membrane fouling will be discussed. Through research and a critical literature review, the report aims to improve understanding of the complexity of fouling phenomena within Anaerobic MBR systems. This is because the environment within the Anaerobic MBR is dynamic and complex, along with the interaction of several phenomena yet known to researchers around the world. Despite many years of research, many questions remain unanswered. With the analysis of as many anaerobic MBR studies available to the author as possible, the report seeks to identify gaps and contradictions presently and recommend questions for future research. The future challenges facing Anaerobic MBR technology have been identified as methanogenesis issues, membrane fouling, limited applicability to dilute wastewaters, operational issues, and scientific research (research topics and standardization of practices) issues.
