description Supplying sufficient and clean water to drink after the occurrence of a disaster are the most important factors for survival and prevention of waterborne diseases. This has become quite a concern especially with the rising frequency of natural occurring disasters.The main purpose of this project is to develop chemicals for the purification of particular types of water during an emergency. Alum (Al2(SO4)3.14-18H2O), Ferrous chloride (FeCl2), Ferric sulfate (Fe2(SO4)3) and Polyaluminium Chloride (PAC) are used as coagulants to reduce the turbidity of the water. pH control such as Ca(OH)2 and NaHCO3 are used to allow the coagulants to work at the most effective pH range and also to ensure that the resulting pH meets the standards for drinking water. The disinfectant selected for this project is Calcium hypochlorite (CaOCl2) and the gauge of the disinfection ability is done by the measure of coliform.
