| Summary: | As a result of growing interest in renewable energy, there is an increase in research
efforts in the marine, wind and solar arena due to their great potential. Although the
wind energy sector continues to be the leader in terms of installed capacity and
investment received, other sectors such as the marine energy sector are chasing up.
Many tidal turbines have been designed using examples based on wind energy
systems. However tidal turbines face much harsher environments than wind turbines.
Brushless doubly fed induction generators, with their lack of mechanical brushes,
present a promising prospect as the future electrical machine of choice for marine
energy systems.
