description Post earthquake and experimental research have shown that old reinforced concrete structures which are designed based on non-seismic details are vulnerable to shear failure during earthquakes, posing a threat to public safety in future earthquakes. Shear failure can lead to a reduction in building lateral strength, change in inelastic deformation mechanism and loss of axial load-carrying capacity. Once the axial strength of the column drops below the designed axial load of the column, excess loads will be transferred to the surrounding columns, this may lead to a propagation of collapse.L-shaped columns at the corners of frame structures and at enclosure of elevator shafts have been extensively used in old buildings, especially in Singapore. However, not much work has been published regarding to the seismic behavior of L-shaped columns.
