Summary:This report serves as a documentation of the work and research that the student has accomplished for her final year project on the processing and characterization of designed crystalline/amorphous magnesium alloys. Magnesium-based alloys have unique properties which make it highly desired for applications in the aerospace, automotive and electronic industries. The prime objective of this project is to design and build an injection caster to fabricate and process designed crystalline/amorphous magnesium alloys, followed by the characterization and mechanical testings that will be conducted on the casted alloy. Rapid cooling rate of the copper chill promotes and produces amorphous structures. Design considerations were evaluated and the most feasible method to cast MgCaZn alloys into rods is via injection casting. Modifications to the injection casting unit was made to further improve the casting process.
