description Augmented virtuality allows the integration of real elements into a primarily virtual world or environment. The application of augmented virtuality in the area of rotorcraft simulation is relatively scarce. Most of the emphasis is on augmenting the virtual environment with real world images. For this thesis, the augmentation comes from collecting data from an actual rotorcraft, such as acceleration and rotational rates, to more accurately recreate the motion of the real rotorcraft with the virtual one. This work evaluated current simulator systems and identified criteria to develop affordable augmented virtuality based systems for effective training application. The Chromakeyed Augmented Virtual Environment (ChrAVE) prototype, created by Mark Lennerton was carefully studied in this project. Using Commercial-Off-The-Shelf equipment to accurately simulate flying a helicopter from a cockpit, ChrAVE seemingly meets the criteria, though it lacks a motion platform. However, research indicated that a motion platform is not necessary and also costly. The report then describes the design and development process of the Apache simulator system, breaking it down to several stages. Details regarding work done on the initial stage is then provided. The challenges which are encountered are then listed, with suggestions for future work given.
