Optical detection is one of the most often employed detection mechanisms in medicine and biology. However, the optical methods which have been used so far in DNA detection relied on bulk optical elements and are difficult to miniaturize. Most of the biological research is based on labeling methods that use fluorescence and radioactivity as they allow high throughput evaluation of molecular interaction and the approaches are well established. However, the disadvantages of this very popular method include lack of sensitivity, interference and cross reactivity.
