Murukeshan Vadakke Matham School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering DRNTU::Engineering 79 p. Recent advancements in the field of medical diagnostics and therapeutics have shown promising developments in early detection of diseases like cancer. Recently optical imaging techniques which employ non-ionizing radiations are preferred. Disease diagnostics especially pertaining to cancer related diseases have been given due importance in medical imaging research. In this context, this project employs photo acoustic spectroscopy which is one of the upcoming techniques to determine the optical and thermal properties of tissues and their interaction with light. This report incorporates the design and development of an open photo acoustic cell (OPC) based on photoacoustic principle for determining the thermal diffusivity of a colon phantom tissue. Experiments were performed using the commercially obtained colon phantom tissue which mimics closely the real tissue optical and thermal properties. Besides this, the phantom is developed by synthesizing polyvinyl alcohol. Gold nanoparticle is incorporated as contrast agent to study and investigate enhancement of photoacoustic signal. Thermal diffusivity properties for both the phantoms, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinyl alcohol-gold nanocomposites (PVA-Au) were studied. Incorporation of gold (Au) affects significantly the thermal diffusivity of PVA.
